Godloam

A dungeon is an ecosystem that hasn't been fed yet.

In development

Godloam is a top-down god game about a cave that is alive. You play the intelligence in the stone at the bottom of it. You cannot place a monster, buy a unit or summon a horde. You can dig, flood, warm, darken and enrich — and then you find out what moves in.

Create conditions, not outcomes

Most dungeon games give you a shop. This one gives you soil chemistry. Flora will only take root where moisture, temperature, fertility and ambient mana are all inside its tolerances. Creatures only settle where there is something to eat. Predators only persist where prey does.

So the loop is indirect and it is the whole game: change the ground, wait, read what happened, change it again. Every population in your dungeon is there because it can survive there, and it will leave — or die — the moment that stops being true.

A world that does not wait for you

Colonies forage, carry food home, breed, exhaust their patch and relocate while you are elsewhere. Corpses feed the ground. A predator removed in one chamber is a moss shortage in another, four in-game years later.

The simulation runs at a fixed ten ticks per second regardless of frame rate, and coarsens rather than pauses where you are not looking. Turning up the speed changes how fast time passes, never what happens in it.

Six affinities that change the ground, not the damage numbers

Every creature, plant and terrain carries an elemental affinity, and an affinity is a job rather than a colour. They interact as three different kinds of relationship, not one.

FireThermal engineer. Raises the temperature of what surrounds it, opening ground to species that could not otherwise live there.
WaterCarrier. Raises moisture, feeds what it touches, and carves routes through the map.
EarthTerraformer. Burrows, reshapes and stabilises. Slow, durable, and difficult to move once established.
LifePropagator. Spreads flora and accelerates recovery in ground that has recently been ruined.
DeathDecomposer. Consumes the dead and returns them to the ground as fertility. Necessary, not evil.
ArcaneCatalyst. Concentrates mana and amplifies its neighbours. Conquers nothing on its own.

Fire and Water are opposed — they cancel, violently, wherever they meet. Earth and Arcane are tensioned — stone grounds raw mana, mana erodes stone, and the border between them grinds. Life and Death are cyclical: they are not at war, they need each other, and a dungeon that has suppressed one has broken the other.

Crucially, this conflict is spatial. Affinities fight over territory and terrain, never over your approval. There are no harmony meters, no faction moods and no creature opinions about your policy.

What you actually do

  • Shape the cave. Carve, flood, collapse, enrich. Terrain is the primary verb.
  • Designate. Mark chambers for a purpose and let the population use them, or not.
  • Read the world. Inspect any creature, colony, plant or patch of ground and see the actual numbers driving it.
  • Live with crises. Events arrive out of the world's own state rather than a timer, and most of them are exploitable if you are quick.
  • Grow the Heart. Advance through tiers of capability funded by the ecology you have managed to keep alive.

Where it is

The simulation core is well advanced and under test. Current work is on legibility, pacing and the presentation layer — making a world that already behaves correctly also read correctly on screen. There is no announced release date and there will not be one until the game is worth playing end to end.

Captures

The build is early and honest about it. Screenshots go up as each pass lands, and older ones stay up — the build log is the progression.
